Went to the Mexican Market for the first time last weekend (La Michocana) and bought some avocados, among other things....
OH MY FLIPPIN GOSH!!! These are hands down, the best avocados I've ever tasted. So much better than the ones at the grocery "chain stores" like Kroger/Meijer.
I need to go back more often.
I'd imagine this is the best thing, aside from moving to Cali and have an Avocado tree in my yard.

That would be awesome, Kuzi.....but (sadly) I don't think it would work out too well in our lovely state. If you try to grow one from seed though, you'll be waiting a while for it to produce fruit.

how tall do they get? id grow indoors. id have to. winter here can be difficult for that plant.
Everything I've heard and seen, sounds like for indoor growing - they top out around 5-8 feet tall. From what I understand, the size limitation is mainly due to the size of the pot/container, followed by pruning/pinching the branches.
"The plant can eventually become very large with a branch spread up to 6 feet. If you don't want a large plant, its size can be controlled by pinching and pruning. " Source Here
i may have to do this. a good avocado is worth the wait.
If you do, will you keep track of your progress and any good sources of info you come across? I may "hit you up" somewhere down the road if we ever try to grow one as well.
I'd love to try it now but we're in a condo and are limited on windows that have good "sunlight exposure."
Our lime tree and half-dozen herb pots that will take up all the available good window space when we move them in for the winter. So until we move to a new house, we can't get any more "year-round" plants. *sigh*
i fear i will have the same issue with a 1926 house.
you could always build a greenhouse in your backyard ;-)
haha, just kidding (sort of).
That's 1 of the things on my "dream house wishlist" - having an insulated, functional year-round green house. And also having a smoking room/cigar den inside the house with a dedicated HVAC/air filter system.
A guy can dream, can't he?

Here's a good place to start, if you feel so inclined: http://www.avocado.org/grow-your-own-tree/
