i was going to start a thread about this but this is the perfect place to ask the question. how do you age a cigar that you love to smoke. i can't seem to age anything i love because i can't control myself not to smoke it. is the trick to buy multiple boxes so you can smoke one box while aging another. i know i can't be the only person who has this problem. i mean my goal was to make my box of cohiba's last a couple years. but between smoking abd gifting i am almost out again. haha

Have you seen how many cigars rip gets in? Boxes and boxes. I'm up to about 500 so thats how my strategy of aging works, just buy way way more than you can smoke and have tons of variety. You are bound to have hundreds of aged cigars in a few years at that rate. Or buy 2 boxes, one to smoke throughout the year, the other to open in a few years.

thats exactly what i was thinking. one to smoke one to age. i have enough cigars now that they will be aging just based on the fact i can't smoke them all in 10 years. haha
I have taken a new project to age certain cigars. We all know that to enjoy a cigar's optimum taste, aging is a great way to go. Today, I have decided to start with Cohiba Behike 52 and 54. The goal is smoke once a month the same cigar from the same box and take notes of the changing flavor, aroma and strength of a cigar
Cohiba Behike 52, number one cigar of 2010. I do not always go with Cigar Afiocinado or other rating organizations top chart but Cohiba Behike is truly one of the top cigar in the world. I will add/edit more information later about the Behike at this section because I left some information in my office
Remember my post "He-Man: The Master of the Cuban cigar"? He is the one who just dropped 4 boxes of Cohiba BHK 52 and one box of BHK 54 this evening. I am still waiting for a box of BHK 56.
I think I read somewhere on CA that 7years of age for the Behike would be perfect for this cigar. I wonder if these boxes could be actionable after 20-30 years of age on them?
hows the project coming along rip. how do you choose which cigars you think will age well. there has to be something in the taste profile that lets you know it will be better with age. is it a sharpness that you hope will round out. whats the secret.
Chris, I am not so sure about 20-30 years aged cigars any longer after smoking many vintage Cubans in Cuba. I asked this question to couple European and Cuban cigar makers. Since I have been smoking few years and not in a position to comment from personal experience but here what I have learned from them:
Any cigar should be smoked from 10-15 years. After that the cigar start weakening some major flavors and certainly lose some background aroma. I have smoked some vintage cigars from 60s and agree with above expert observation.

The project is getting out of control since I have so many boxes to add in this project.
When I find the harshness and metalic edge in a cigar then I immediately put them for rest. My observation is- after a year aging Cubans settle down the harshness faster than Non-Cuban. Padron takes 2-3 years. CCs does not have the metalic edge like other NCs. Also when a cigar is bold as well as harsh then it is really painful to smoke. When Viaje Oro Reserva #5 was releases in 2010, it was little harsh and also had the painful metalic finish. Now after three years of aging, they are fantastic. I had same experience with some Opus X, Zino Davidoff Platinum Emperor Edition. At the same time, there are well aged cigar as regular Zino Platinum line, La Palina Goldie.
The secret is, once you have enough for smoking then it is easy to age them as long as you want.

Somehow I end up smoking a MOW Armada corona this afternoon. It was a gift from BigChunks. I have some reservation about AJs blend for its overpowering spiciness. I do respect other opinions who like his blends. The smoke wasn't bad at all but i felt the strong mettalic finish at the back of my tongue. The flavors were storng with earth, wood, mocha, intense black pepper, leather. It also reminded me that two years ago, I bought a full chest of 32 Toro Grande Armada and forgot about it.
I need to smoke one from the chest soon to see how they aged after two years. Corona shape releases intense smoke and I believe the Toro Grande shape will release the smoke and flavor differently. However, I am adding this chest to my aging project which I smoke every six months.
Nice box. I like to un cello about 5 to 10 when I put an NC box down for aging. Maybe its just opinion but I think they age faster without the cellophane on.
3. Trinidad Robusto Extra from 2010. When I was in Cuba, I heard the rumor that this size is going to be out of production soon. When I asked my friend at Casa del Habano, he told me that they are considering it but haven’t taken any final decision. However,at the same time he advised me to get couple boxes in case. I bought two boxes from 2010s and now added them to my aging project.
Wow, now that's a collection bro, u can send me 1 and I will give it a review lol, seriously though that's a cool idea can't wait to c how it turns out, wish I was doing this project.
Hi Jeep, I added 18-20 boxes to my aging project recently. I brought some Cuban cigars from 2000, 2003, 2004, 2006. They do not need further aging but i am experimenting with It. I am close to believe that sometime longer aging also loss some delicate background flavors and notes. I cannot vouch for this theory until I smoke some more. Lately, I have been smoking a lot. I will share the findings periodically.

added anything new lately rip. or smoked any that you want to comment on.
Your welcome Jeep. I am happy to know that you enjoy these threads. I will include all the boxes I have added to this project periodically. I need to figure out how to organize this thread more systematically. Thanks!

Hi Keith, thanks for your kind words. Lately, I have been obsessed with aging cigars. The ultimate way to enjoy a great cigar comes with proper aging. The only problem is the waiting period. This is a reason why I end up with my current and decent collection.
