I am a college student at UW Stout and there is discussion going around banning smoking. First it oblivious to have people stop smoking cigarette around building and to not bother other students with the smoke. But having a completely banned on campus is ridiculous. I do not smoke cigarettes, I enjoy the cigar I have once every couple of weeks with my friends when the weather is nice. I am not mad about this for personal reasons, I am mad because my liberal based college is going after people's rights to be able to smoke. This is a school that gets funding from the government, if it was a private college I believe they can do whatever they want. But we have a school here that is receiving money from the government that receives taxes from people who smoke... as a government based college we should not be banning anything that is human right, but along with that not to ban anything that our government is so bluntly in favor for.

I work at a state college that recently "banned" smoking on campus. After 2 years of debate they finally settled on a smoking ban everywhere but in 7 designated smoking areas. It was all a big PR stunt to make the college look good for all the anti-smoking goons.

the current incarnation of government is not worried about your rights. they are worried about power and control. they are, in fact, taking away your right to smoke. sucks dont it?

The teach any English at that school?

Kuzi, I didn't think the government was banning smoking at that school... I thought it was the school. But we can blame the government anyway.

A public school that receives government funding. Government salaries. An organization that is not private.

I thought it was a public school... meaning it takes state dollars. I went to a public university. It takes state dollars. It is not owned and run by the government. If this school is actually run by the federal government, then obviously it was Obama who came in and banned all smoking. You know how Obama feels about smokers.. he thinks they should all be burned at the stake. Wait.. doesn't he smoke? Ah, heck.. blame him anyway.

the government puts money into the schools, therefore they have some sway in what the school does. All government buildings are smoke free. there is a connection there.

I'm not the one that made the accusation. Innocent until proven guilty? A claim that the government made this happen sounds to me like an example libel/slander.

I believe there was no government involvement with this decision. It is not official yet, but the school has been handing out surveys and emails to find out the student decision on the idea. But all in all it is the deans choice if it will be ban next year or not.

    ahh....
another decision made for "the good of the people" at the expense of the individual.

but I thought your point was that the people who own/run the place should be allowed to make their own decision. Sounds like that was the case here. And if people don't like it, they can go to school elsewhere. Just like your idea with restaurants -- if customers don't like it, they can go eat elsewhere.

i see what you are trying to get at here. the differnce is that this a a government entity. It is a PUBLIC school. I can understand the no smoking indoors in the buildings used for classes and what not but if i read this correctly there is no smoking anywhere on campus. this includes outdoors and in dorm rooms. Maybe i misread, but i see no problem with smoking in those places.
  • dutyjedutyje Everyone, Registered Users Posts: 2,263
It's not a government entity. It is a private entity which accepts government funds in exchange for being subject to certain guidelines/restrictions. None of those restrictions include the right to smoke.

There is a difference between government-run and government-funded. If you're saying that, because they are subject to certain regulations, then wouldn't all private businesses be government run? Last I checked, there were no (legal) private businesses around that aren't subject to regulation.

yeah... thats part of the reason why i think this is no longer a free market. the government steps in and regulates what people can and cannot produce or how they can produce it. so yea, they all are government run, at least in part.

  • dutyjedutyje Everyone, Registered Users Posts: 2,263
By your logic, any person or entity which exists under the domain of a government is inherently government-run. Like me saying our household is run by the HOA. By the people, for the people.
  • kuzi16kuzi16 Everyone, Registered Users Posts: 14,471
not really. the government cant tell me what to do in my own house.

    but what about murder?

    thtas different. how?

it infringes on that persons right to life. thats not government run. even if there were no government, that right still exists.

but if i am they cant come in and stop me unless they have proof.

but this does bring up another issue.
the government shouldnt be able to tell me i cant grow weed.

    how bout them apples?

They also say you can't make meth

They also say you can't build a weapon with anthrax

They also say you can't look at child pornography
  • kuzi16kuzi16 Everyone, Registered Users Posts: 14,471
    awe man! no anthrax?!

there goes my plans for my vacation

    no but seriously...
methlabs can and do explode. this infringes on the rights of others, anthrax weapons also infringe on the rights of others, and child porn is fucked up AND it infringes on the rights of that child.

if i grow weed and smoke it myself, it is a victimless crime. this goes back to the statement: your right to swing a fist ends where my nose begins. when someone grows ans smokes his own weed whos nose is he punching?

im all about individual rights and personal responsibility. those laws that you stated above promote individual rights because they (hopefully) prevent rights from being infringed on. is that government control? if you think that protection of individual rights (one of the few things the government is SUPPOSED to do) is "control" then yes, it is.
