Cigar "Misses" of the year - 2011

denniskingdennisking Everyone, Registered Users Posts: 3,681
well, my friend Stephen put the Cigars of the Year up and it inspired my negative attitude to put up the "Misses" of the year. these are cigars that came out or were revised this year that you feel didn't really hold up to the hype or standard.
what I would like to stress in this post is that I don't want to see blanket statements like "infused cigars" or Acid or crappy machine mades like Swisher and White Owl. this is strictly for sticks you had this year that were new to market that just didn't do it for you.

I will begin

Cain Daytona - nope. not good. Cain Habano and Cain F are great. Daytona was not good. Like smoking a flowery, leathery dog turd.

Diesel Unlimited. yup, not my cup of tea. AJ makes some awesome sticks but the flavor on this one is a "no-go" for me.

Kristoff Maduro. well constructed and decent but super one dimensional to the point of flawed.

La Aurora 107. maybe I'm crazy but I haven't had a La Aurora I've liked yet. someone prove me wrong on this but dang, the 107 is not very good. especially given the hype.

Let's see your "misses" of the year folks

I really have to agree with La Aurora in general, I haven't had one I liked yet. While I haven't hated any, I just didn't enjoy the flavors of the Aurora 1495 series, or the 107. Maybe its just Dominican baccy isn't my thing. Well constructed, don't get me wrong, but not my cup o tea.

I would like to try a Preferidos maduro though, I have a feeling that would be the 1st La Aurora I loved.

Interesting. I loved both the Daytona and the 107, but can't stand the Cain Habano or F. In fact, I think La Aurora really is consistent as hell, and that the Daytona is the first Cain cigar that tastes well blended, instead of being heavy handed and juvenile in concept.

different palates enjoy different things. funny though, we both like a lot of the same sticks.

I enjoyed the Daytona as well, the only Cain cigar I like aside from the original F. The Swag, imo, was a huge miss. Until I get a chance to revisit, I thought the EPC Maduro was a miss...I fully intend to give this one a few more shots as Carrillo is one of my favorite blenders, but for the time being I'm recording it as a miss. Another miss for me was La Casita Criolla, good concept that turned out to be a one trick pony...not bad by any means, but I'd hoped for much more.

I will probably get some heat, but I smoked a "My Uzi Weighs A Ton" with Morgan (bip) and thought it was only so so.
It may age well, but it seemed to be lacking the depth. I guess I shouldn't categorize it with LP T52 and 9.
I am going to try one later on maybe I was having an off day.

On the boot list: 5 Vegas Relic (trouble keeping it lit), La Aurora 107 (tight draw), EPC Core (great burn but just not enough umph for me), Brick House (didn't like the taste at all).

On the flip side, I love the Diesel Unlimiteds.

It's just not meant to be anything like any of the Liga Privada blends, and isn't technically a DE stick at all (Some DE tobacco, plus Subculture studios concept, marketing, art etc, all on a JdN cigar)

SWAG was a huge let down for sure!

but the EPC maddy on the other hand, is a brilliant cigar, imho. Really surprised y'all don't like them!

I was going to point that out as well! Always a step ahead, Doc. lol

So I ordered a Daytona after reading it was the #4 cigar of the year in Cigar Journal... I will be interested to see how it is, seems there are several thumbs down on that one.

I agreed with the Diesel Unlimited... until today. I had smoked 2 before and did not like them at all, so I let my last one sit for about 9 months, uninterested in it...totally different cigar to me now, very rich enjoyable flavor without a strong pepper kick, I really liked it.

I got a La Aurora maduro preferido in a sampler and really enjoyed that one too. They're so damn expensive though, almost pulled the trigger when they were on the daily special yesterday but I'm out of room!

try dry boxing the Relic to control the burn issues. I hear it helps.

    Dont waste your time.
One of the few cigars I really have no desire to ever smoke again.

The worst cigar I had this year was recently, it was a Garo Double Habano from the sister site. I took the chance based on the the old school 2007 rave reviews about the brand and I had to pitch it at the halfway point. I tossed the rest in the trash (yeah that bad wouldn't even give them away) but should have sent them back for a credit (Doh!). They were Cremosa bad.

I'm with you on the SWAG...just didn't do anything for me. And I might get killed for this but I wasn't impressed with the Alec Bradley Black Market.

Viaje Viaje Viaje. The Oro Koa is good and so is the lancero from the event but those will be my last purchases from Andre. Sorry buddy but Pete and Dion put you to shame! Also Tom and Jay from AKA have a very good product out now.

I know it is a JdN in conjunction with DE, I guess the hype is what killed it for me. I love San Andreas wrappers. Oh well I still have 4 of them before they were banded, so maybe when I revisit them they will be more dimensional, or I will be less judgemental.
I guess when you look at DE LPs and JdN Dark Corojo those are just so solid.

I thought the Relic was a real "lightweight"; literally. It was as light as a feather, burned quickly, and had an even quicker finish. If I screwed my wife the way that cigar burned, she'd make me buy a 55 gal drum of viagra.

Same here, IMO the diesel unl need about 12 months on them and then they turn into a fantastic smoke. I think one of the big misses is the RP 50th anniv.

I agree with the SWAG being a bust. Also wasn't impressed with the Cain line at all. For me the OSA was pretty crap too.

I got an OSA free sample from ccom. Think god I didn't pay for those is all I have to say, I put it out about 1/4 into it. Then went and fired up an sl oval.

Where is the love guys... Okay, CAO OSA wasn't the greatest thing released in 2011, but I truely had a good time with it.. A bit milder than most cigars I smoke and a little one dimensional, but not really that bad. I would say it had a unique taste. Outside the LaTraviata which I find to be a fantastic cigar, I don't keep any other CAO in my humidor. Wait, take that back, I do have an LX2 and MX2 aging, But the OSA is a cigar that I will smoke again. ( at least twice since I have that many left)

Agreed. Had my first OSA just the other day and absolutely loved it. I'll admit that a lot of that has to do with where my tastes are at this point, and the OSA really dials in on that. It reminds me a bit of the Verdadero Organic in that it just has a really unique, "raw" flavor. Love it.
