On a serious note. Advice for calibrating and aligning the sight and the scope?

No one mentioned Uranus!!!
Maybe use some stationary object in the distance, like a building feature, or flagpole, way off in the distance. You may want to get an Astronomy For Beginners book. I had one that showed the different seasons for different areas and what was in the sky. Very basic, but perfect for this dummy. If you are viewing planets and other objects in the sky, you will have to move the scope to keep them in view as the earth turns. When looking at a full, or bright moon, you will probably need a filter too.
If you can tote it up to the mountains the best viewing of space is away from city lights and the air is clearer.
