You ever just hate your job?

I'm hating mine right now. They got me running Captain on a boat that as far as I'm concerned should be laid up for repairs. It's hard to believe this is the same type of boat as I usually ride. This thing is suffering from neglect so bad that every day there's a new issue popping up. The first couple days I was ready to pull out my hair. I'm on the verge of telling them to just send me home and get someone else to deal with all the problems on here.

What you Captain of? When I was offshore fishing off South Padre Island I used to troll around Shrimpers tied up together in the morning to cull the catch and wait for evening. Action was fast during the culling but some of those boats looked more like wrecks, especially the wood hulled boats. Used to trade a six pack for a bucket of shrimp from the deck hands when the Captain was asleep.

I like that. and you hate it? Must have a little Mark Twain in your blood. I didn't pick up on it from your location of W Va. I suppose you wouldn't want to loose an engine or steering on a busy river. I never got to pilot anything bigger than a 50ft sport fisher. Had searched for the perfect sailboat to sail the gulf for 7 yrs but moved to cowboy country before finding it.

Most of the time I enjoy it. That is when I'm on a boat I've got confidence in. But when your at flood stage and you've got little faith in the vessel it can be trying.

I love my job, I just hate the company I work for sometimes. I have similar issues as you except I work on airplanes. The company I work for never wants to spend the money they should on tools, equipment, quality technicians, but always complain about work not being done right, work taking too long, things being broken, etc.

I however do not have to worry about sinking to the bottom of a river.

Some people who work here did almost drop an ERJ-145 off of jacks last year though. That would have really sucked.

Right now as a matter of fact. My incompetent coworkers have ruined the option of working 4/10s instead of 5/8s. They can't get here on time when they are supposed to be here at 8 much less try to get here at 7. I'm the one in my 20s who should be irresponsible and late and I'm the only SOB that gets here on time. Assholes! They're all 40 plus and worthless.

It just seems to get worse evry year. I worked for a fortune 50 company based in France. All they ever think about is short range savings instead of looking at the long term and the effects they are placing on it. They send in a new plant mgr who cuts and slashes to look good. He gets promoted and the nexxt one comes in to pick up the pieces and eventually gets fired. Than the next one does the same as the first and gets promoted and on and on and on. Its also the same all over the world. Harvard business school taught the short 12 month view and they have been doing it ever since. Not to mention with my old corp. they looked only at what schools you went to and not what you were capable of doing. I'm glad I'm out of the race though I miss the world travels.

I hear ya, I used to have two mid-20 somethings and two 50 somethings in my office; the 20's I could trust to do anything, do it right, and treat people well while doing it. Whatever I asked of them got done without complaining, on time, and had happy participants at the end. My 50-somethings i want to just shoot in the face, one can't even make it to work on time and has BS excuses everytime and I have never met anyone who dreams up drama the way she does. The other one, god forbid i ask her to stretch even a little beyond her normal role or change our process even a little. And after layoffs I'm stuck with the damn 50-somethings. I get pretty pissed when I hear the "Millenials don't know how to work" BS, it's no different than any other generation, some work hard and some don't. At the moment I have more problems with boomers throughout my organization than milenials. end rant.

Hehe this is odd. I ended up getting "discharged" last week for voicing an opinion the Chef didn't want to hear. Didn't have anything lined up either! I was looking though in preparation for giving my notice. It's sad to put in 3 years at a place and have nothing to show for it... Even with the added stress of having to try and find work and make ends meet while I'm not working it's better than being there though. The place was so poorly managed and did nothing for anyone from within. It honestly felt like a weight had been lifted once I walked out for the last time.

You have no idea how nice that is to hear. I feel for you. We might be getting a step increase(gov't work) I would get .69 an hour while the slackers are getting $2+ ... ugh.

Next time you take a job interview, look up from that paper full of numbers, look at the people you will be working with. Are they idjuts? Are they clones? Are they doing the right things? Are they happy? Are they human? Look back down at the paper and figure how many of those numbers you would trade to be able to have a decent happy day, day after day, as long as it takes? Generally speaking, the smaller an outfit is, the less they pay, but the more sensibly they act. Rather work for half the pay with full wits than twice the pay for half wits, myself.

These are just the musings of an old man who's been through it. I've loaded trucks, driven van, taught drama, sold both vacuum cleaners and insurance door to door, crafted interiors for custom yachts, managed construction, worked in an office, programmed, bussed, cleaned, designed ... all the things an expensive liberal arts degree uniquely qualifies you to do. I only had one rule: don't work for jerks. The moment I stopped enjoying a job I always looked for a way out. Monday I am 65. I look now at friends and family who put up with morons, rules, and tools, year after year after year, until they emerge all wizened and bitter, just because they were afraid to go without a paycheck, and I pity them today. No pension is worth thirty years of misery and frustration. Life is a gamble as it is. You might win big, you might crap out, you most likely will just get by. So when you enter the casino, pick the happy table and sit beside a pretty girl. More fun to lose your shirt there.

Here's what counts: If you take that kind of sanguine attitude, then when you do interview with decent intelligent hard-working happy folks who really want to get the job done the right way cause they enjoy it, then they will look you in the eye, and cross your palm, and think to themselves "Here's the kind of man who will fit right in with us."
