Starting Disability on Monday

Well Folks. It's time. I have my back surgery next week and today is my last day of work for a few months. I am not looking forward to staying home. I hate not working. I know that this is the best thing, and that the surgery will be a complete success even life-changing. I'm just not looking forward to being out of work. Anyone gone through Short Term Disability? Any advice yall can give? All responses, no matter how silly, insulting or inflammatory will be appreciated. That is all. Carry on...

Just use the time to let your back heal properly. Don't push yourself thinking you know better.

Get plenty of rest after the surgery. Do no try and do too much to quickly. Everyone I know that has had back surgery had tried to recover too quickly and hurt themselves in the process.
    Hope the best for you.

I plan to take it easy and not do what I always do. I usually just man up and walk it off. That's what got me to this point, I'm sure. I know that this will take time, a lot of rest, and probably laying off the stogies for a couple months. My plan is to follow the Surgeon's orders to the letter. Maybe I'll get into daytime soaps, or back into Dungeons and Dragons.

I was on long term disability for 9 weeks, it was nice, though I got fat.

If your experience is anything like mine, then they will have you up and walking within a few hours of your surgery !!. When the nurse first came in and told me it was time to get out of bed and stand up, I told her she must have the wrong patient because I had just had back surgery and I sure wouldn't be standing up for some time yet. She just smiled and told me that no she had the right guy and that I would indeed be standing up before she left... she was right.

I couldn't believe it, but again she told me that I would be up and walking around myself shortly. She was right again, as later that day I was walking across the room to the bathroom by myself.

You will be told what you can and can't do or lift but they don't treat you with kid gloves after back surgery and they want you up and moving before the stiffness from the sugery sets in. It would be harder to get up and walk a day or two after surgery then within a couple of hours is what they told me. My back is better now then when I was a teenager, so I guess they were right. Good luck with your proceedure bro'.

....no no no. See that is what your socialist medical gets you. Here in the US they want us to stay as long as possible so they make the most money.

Hope all goes well with your surgery my friend and wish you a speedy recovery. I just had to go on short term for a month. Hope yours goes better than mine. They kept screwing in up and I didn't recieve any pay for a month. One check was only for 2 days pay the promised it would all be on the next check and guess what, It wasn't just the days I sold to make up for the lost pay. I about flipped out called them raising hell. They finally got it straightened out and sent me a check for all 23 days.

Chris I live with a degenerative muscular and spinal auto-immune disorder , when I land in Texas tomorrow and we get to hook up after the half day of classes I'll happily talk to you about it and what I have learned over the years and my life of dealing with back and muscle disability ;)

Good luck!! I'm scheduling back surgery tomorrow. I'm not excited about it but after 6 weeks of misery I've got to do something! Actually, the forums and books have kept me sane and laughing at times. I think technology has improved so much over the years. Get well soon and take care of yourself!!

I'm gettin pumped up! Thursday is the day! I had to go in this morning and get fitted for a back brace. Man. That thing's medieval! I could survive a plane crash in that thing! It's a drab black colored thing and I have to wear it outside my clothes, so I'll have to Bedazzle it (Any man that knows what Bedazzle means, turn in your man card immediately and start drinking milk instead of beer. My wife showed me). I was told that I would be walking after the anesthesia wore off whether I wanted to or not. I think that the hot nurse said something about dragging me by a catheter. I wasn't really paying attention to what she was saying so I can'treally tell you the whole conversation. I will also be required to walk 2 miles a day.

Two miles a day in Texas heat and humidity, with a back brace that will probably heat up like a vampire in a tanning bed. Did I mention that I'll be shuffling behind a walker? LOL Picture that and tell me you don't chuckle. That's going to be some funny $hit to watch. Even if it'll be my fat *** out there being laughed at by all the soccer-moms in the neighborhood. Good thing I have a good sence of humor.

Going to the bathroom is going to be fun. My wife already told me that there ain't no way in hell that she'll allow me to install one of those 18 inch tall toilet seats. Nor will she allow me to bolt some handicap bars in by the toilet. That's OK. I rigged a rope through the ceiling joice to pull myself up. I'm not done. I still need to incorporate all the pulleys and anchor it to the floor. *Giggle. Looks like that pallaites machine will finally be used as something other than a drying rack. My buddy is coming over tomorrow with his welder so the plan might change. I'll keep yall up to date. Thanks again for your encouragement.
