While I understand cities having to crunch and having to charge for services, this was a despicable thing to do. As a public servant you are there to protect people and go above and beyond the required duties. I do this on a daily basis and everyone in the city I work for does this. It's a matter of common decency.

+1... I didn't know how to put my thoughts to words...
Devil's advocate here...Is it also common decency for someone who doesn't have health care of any type gets sick goes to an emergency room and gets free treatment while others have to pay large fees to get health care.
Something similar happened to my friend here in CA. He was reworking his old electrical system in his barn when sparks flew and his haystack went up pretty quick. He called the firedepartment and there is a fire hous located 3/4 of a mile from him. But the firehouse belonged to riverdale county(not the county he lived in, he had to wait 15 minutes for Lemoore FD(which was 20 miles away, but in his county) to respond. Luckily they douched it before it jumped over to his house, but thats pretty F'ed up. Apparently it all goes by county here. Back in MD where i grew up, it went by which ever firehouse was closest, then the respective county came and relieved the first responder if it took them longer to get there.
Once again my brothers on the left insist on equating the idiocy of some podunk town in Tennessee with serious issues supported by my conservative brothers. Way to go guys, you just can't help yourself can you.

They kinda do it to themselves dont they?? I mean, if the targets werent generally so easy...lol.
As Ive said Squirrel all we care about now adays are the gods---of course that Jesus character they created, but also that second god---the almighty dollar. Sad story, not a huge repub vs dem issue....but I do see the corrolation. Does seem like playing both sides against the middle....health care shouldnt be guarenteed, but fire protection should? Both are about paying to keep away or stop something that can destroy you, both have a cost put on on people for the service......On second thought, dont even think I have the energy for this one.
thats crap for people who are paying their taxes....lol...im actualy watching the story now! lol....its bs....fire every dam fire chief in that town and all personel that had a hand in getting that fee approved.....its bs!!!!! we pay for it already
If something happens you you have to be rushed to the hospital, you're health insurance (if you have it) pays for a good majority of the ambulance ride. Why can't they set it up so your home owners insurance pays the fire department X amount of money to put the fire out. I understand this will raise the price of insurance but it would be minimal. I think you may start to see that if stuff like this continues. The owners insurance will now have to pay 100% of the cost because it is a total loss versus say $30k if they could have put the fire out before it spread. Or, insurance companies will require you to pay the $75 annual fee or you won't be covered in the case of a fire.
On a side note can you imagine how much of a jackass this guy felt like watching his house burn? Hopefully he kept that 75 bucks in his wallet so he could go grab a drink or 2 to forget his idiocy.
