That's why I decided to borrow this question from you. I was actually a little suprised that dutyje got it when he did, I figured even with that specific of a hint it would be tough.

My college roommate was obsessed with Japanese-manufactured autos and planes.. these days, he owns a couple WWII-era fighter planes. A couple of our friends were really big rock climbers (I wasn't at the time), and he always said they should get a Daihatsu Rocky.. that just kinda stuck with me.

Alright, easy enough...which athlete did I meet in the Pittsburgh International Airport when I was 10 yo. Hint: I'm 33 now, and he was in his prime or maybe just on the downside of his career.
